To all the girls out there, of different age, skin colour, and sizes thinking that skinny girls have it all good for them, who are aiming to become a replica of that “it” girl whose pictures you constantly reblog on Tumblr or secretly stash in a thinspiration folder on your laptop, having the mindset that things will be better for you and life will be complete once you drop a few dress sizes:
Trust me, it does not work that way. Being/Hitting a size zero, or a double-zero, isn’t everything. You become so engross (too engross) with losing weight in that ridiculously short amount of time that you forget about the other things in life. The little things, the better things. The important things, and all the other things and people that mattered to you before you forgot about them.
There is no need for you to apologize for who you are or how you look. To hell with society and their constant portrayal of thin girls everywhere. Because you have more important things to do. You have a career to pursue, you have creativity to develop, you have a family to spend time with and friends to love. You live in a society that needs your attention and your help. In light of what is happening to women across the globe—rape, poverty, lack of health care, lack of legal rights, and civil war on a daily basis—our obsession with calorie counting seems ridiculous.
So what if you lose a whole load of weight just to prove to the people who laughed at you? What happens after that? Do you think that just because you’ve become so hauntingly thin that people will stop the bullying? No. We are all vicious creatures. Wolves that hunt in packs, and we will never fail to find something, anything, to hurt someone.
So my point is, if you are choosing to lose weight the healthy way, that you are convinced that you have to change your body to make yourself happy, go ahead and you have my support. But if it’s really what you think your partner wants, if it’s really what you think your mother wants, if it’s really what you think Alexa Chung or any Tumblr-girl wants, or if it’s what you think you’ve been doing for just about forever and it isn’t working and some days you just hope a car will run you over but you’re pretty damn sure that you’re so fat that the speeding vehicle will simply bounce off you, then my dear girl, it is time for you to stop and reevaluate.
